What is Skin Cycling?
Skin cycling is a four-night skincare routine designed to prevent irritation and maximize results by alternating active ingredients with recovery nights. This method is perfect for those with sensitive skin (like me!) who still want the benefits of actives like exfoliants and retinol without overdoing it.
The 4-Night Skin Cycling Routine:
- Night 1: Exfoliation Night – Focus on chemical exfoliants to remove dead skin cells.
- Night 2: Retinol Night – Apply retinol to target fine lines, acne, and skin texture.
- Nights 3 & 4: Recovery Nights – Hydrate and repair your skin barrier.
By giving your skin time to heal between active ingredients, you reduce irritation and allow your products to work more effectively over time.
My Step-by-Step Nighttime Skincare Routine
Now that you understand the concept, here’s exactly how I incorporate skin cycling into my nighttime routine.
Step 1: Double Cleanse
Cleansing is the foundation of any great skincare routine! I start with an oil-based cleanser to remove makeup, sunscreen, and excess oil, then follow up with a gentle water-based cleanser.
- Oil Cleanser: Elemis Pro-Collagen Naked Cleansing Balm has been my go-to for the past 3 months. I chose the naked version because it didn’t sting my eyes!
- Water-Based Cleanser: The Face Shop Rice Water Bright Foaming Cleanser is a very affordable vegan facial cleanser that gets the job done without making my face feel stripped and tight! It also helps to brighten your skin as well!
Pro Tip: If you’re using an oil cleanser, always apply it to dry skin first and emulsify it with water before rinsing off.
Step 2: Exfoliation, Retinol, or Hydration (Depends on the Night!)
- Night 1: Exfoliation Night – I use the Dr. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta Universal Daily Peel to exfoliate and brighten my skin gently. If you have sensitive skin, I highly recommend NOT using this every day. That’s why using this within a skin cycling routine works so well for my sensitive skin.
- Night 2: Retinol Night – After using a hydrating toner, I apply Shani Darden Retinol Reform to improve skin texture and fine lines. This has been the best and most effective retinol for my sensitive skin so far.
- Nights 3 & 4: Recovery Nights – I focus on hydrating my skin with Beekman 1802 Milkshake Hydrating Toner and Estee Lauder Advanced Night Repair Serum.
Step 3: Moisturizer
Regardless of the night, I will always use a moisturizer to lock in hydration (especially during the winter).
- I have been using Fenty Skin Instant Reset Overnight Recovery Gel Cream for about 3 months now and it’s definitely a new favorite. It is a deeply hydrating yet lightweight moisturizer that helps brighten my skin over time.
Step 4: Extras (Optional)
-
- Eye Cream: I’ve been using BeautyStat Universal C Eye Perfector to target my dark circles and fine lines.
- Lip Mask: Fenty Skin Plush Puddin’ Intensive Recovery Lip Mask has been a go-to skincare product every since it first launched. This lip mask keeps my lips soft and moisturized overnight.
Why I Swear by Skin Cycling
Before skin cycling, I was using too many active ingredients at once, which lead to irritation and breakouts. By alternating actives with recovery nights, my skin has become: ✅ Brighter ✅ Clearer ✅ More even-toned ✅ Less sensitive
If you’ve been struggling with irritation or feel like your skincare routine isn’t working, I highly recommend trying skin cycling.
Patience and consistency are key! Give your skin at least 6-8 weeks to adjust, and you’ll start seeing real results.
